Research

Most of my research is on cooperative communications and resource allocation in wireless broadband systems. Currently, I am focussing on wireless resource allocation for mobile media streaming, based on context and cross-layer information. My methodical interest reaches from optimization, via channel and traffic models, to prototyping and experiments.

So far, I published about 70 research papers, filed more than 30 patent proposals, held several tutorials, and received 7 awards. In 2010, I received my Ph.D. in computer science with summa cum laude and joined Bell Labs, Stuttgart. In 2015, I moved to Huawei's new Math and Algorithms Lab in Paris to lead the Context-Aware Optimization group.

Besides my industrial research projects, I am supporting academic research and provide consulting to companies and organizations.


Projects

I have experience in applying for EC, DFG, and industrial funding as well as in leading academic and industrial research projects.

At Huawei I am

  • Leading the Context-aware Optimization team at the Mathematical and Algorithmic Science Lab in Paris, France focusing on new adaptation algorithms for wireless resource allocation
  • Are leading projects, product transfers and academic collaborations to build experience-centric wireless networks (mostly for media streaming).

At Bell Labs I was

  • Leading Researcher in the project Context-Aware Resource Allocation Test Environment (カラテ / CARATE) with net mobile AG, Dusseldorf.
  • Leading the research collaboration "Predictive Ressource Allocation (PreReal)" with HHI, Berlin since 2011
  • Contributing to the EC-funded research project METIS
  • Serving as intellectual collaborator for the NSF CAREER program "Towards Context-Aware, Self-Organizing Wireless Small Cell Networks" of Prof. Walid Saad, University of Miami
  • Leading the research collaboration "Smarter Phones And smarter Networks (SPAN)" with UPB, Paderborn from 2012 to 2013

Teaching

I am a certified university lector of the German state NRW and experienced supervisor of Bachelor, Master, and PhD theses.

I founded the PhD internship program of Bell Labs, Germany in 2010 and led it until the end of 2014. Until then, 64 interns from 14 countries profited from this program by joining Bell Labs, Stuttgart for 3 to 6 months. At Bell Labs, I personally supervised 18 Ph.D. students, 6 Master students, and 2 Bachelor students in the fields wireless resource allocation, cooperative communications, optimization, machine learning, and applied statistics.

Being a teaching assistant at UPB, I supervised

  • 3 project groups PG CoopNet, PG mobicom I, and PG mobicom II
    (each group is a one year research project with about 12 students),
  • 6 Bachelor theses, and
  • 5 Master/Diploma theses
in the fields of wireless channel modeling, OFDMA subcarrier allocation, and cooperative networks.
