PACE graduates proven to be successful entrepreneurs

Recently, the University of Paderborn has seen three successful start-up companies spin off from academic research. All three companies were co-founded by PACE PhD alumni.

In the spring of 2009, Dr. Jens Peter Kempkes, Dr. Ingmar Steinzen (both PACE alumni) and Dr. Stefan Bunte founded ORCONOMY GmbH (www.orconomy.de), a business dedicated to optimizing business decisions and processes using latest mathematical optimization and simulation techniques. Both are results of recent advances of operations research. In a podcast published by the regional business publication Wirtschaft Regional, Jens Peter Kempkes explains the strategy and business model of this brand new spin off. The podcast (in German) can be viewed here.

More recently, Dr. Simon Altemeier (PACE alumnus), Dr. Christoph Danne (PACE alumnus) and Dr. Viktor Dück developed the business plan for a company called [DI]² (Decision Intelligence, Development & Integration). The consulting and software company will support their clients in complex decision and planning situations with intelligent software solutions including simulation and optimization techniques as well as improvement of existing decision and business processes.

2008 was the year in which our first entrepreneur alumnus, Dr. Christoph Laroque, founded the company reQuire Consultants GmbH together with partner Dr. Andre Döring (www.reQuire-consultants.de). The consulting company focuses on small and medium-sized enterprises and helps them improve their production and logistics processes through efficient design and control of the material flow, the material input and the company’s cost structures.

We are very proud of the entrepreneurship our students and alumni demonstrate and will continue to support the quality of entrepreneurship in our students through a newly developed PACE+ program. This soft skill program allows PhD students to work towards an extra complementary skills certificate in one of three tracks: entrepreneurship, scientific career, or business management.
