Participation, Scholarships, Positions
The Research Training Group “Micro- and Nanostructures in Optoelectronics and Photonics” (DFG Research Training Group GRK1464) at the University of Paderborn invites international applications for participation as Ph.D. students.
Optoelectronics and photonics are key technologies of the 21st century that provide products for many areas of life, including communication, traffic, medicine, culture and entertainment. While communication via optical fibers is pretty established, products like liquid crystal displays or semiconductor laser diodes are currently subject of a spectacular gain of sales. In addition, single photon sources and active integrated optical elements based photonic crystals, metamaterials, microresonators or plasmonic structures are the subject of topical basic research. The University of Paderborn supports extensively research on fundamentals, manufacturing and applications of micro- und nanostructures that are indispensable in optoelectronics and photonics.
The Research Training Group intends to contribute in the following areas

  • Photonic Crystals and Metamaterials
  • Physics and Technology of Optoelectronic semiconductors
  • Microscopic Quantum Theory and Electrodynamics Simulations
  • Integrated Optics
  • Sensors
  • Polymers and Colloids
  • Liquid Crystals

Detailed information about our research fields and faculty members is available on our websites.

Admissions Criteria

  • A Master degree (or diploma) in physics, chemistry, or electrical engineering
  • Above average grades for your Master courses.
  • A TOEFL score of minimum 80, or an IELTS score of minimum 6.0, or a TestDaF certificate, level C1 (required for everyone except nationals from English- or German-speaking countries).

Admission of Ph. D. students is offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, for one year each. Ph.D. candidates seeking an excellent research environment will find ideal conditions and maximum support. Acceptance of the admission requires participation in the study program and active involvement in the graduate research program. Ph.D. students must be registered at the University of Paderborn, and are expected to take up residence in or near Paderborn.

Ph. D. candidates who are interested in the program are invited to apply for a temporary, part-time position (TVL 13, 0.75%).

Please direct your application to the admission office.

Please apply  in electronic form using our online application through the website or download the application form given on this website and send it together with copies of your certificates by mail.
